Does AGUK publish my SPF Records?

DETAILS:

Yes we publish SPF records for all domains hosted by AGUK that use our DNS servers. The default SPF record is:

"v=spf1 include:netsvr.net ?all"

netsvr.net @ "v=spf1 ip4:80.94.198.94 ip4:69.56.206.179 ?all"

If you send your email through the AGUK mail server then we will respond with PASS to any SPF check performed.

If you send your email by a different mail server but use a domain hosted by us then the response would be NEUTRAL.

NOTES:

We use the netsvr.net domain for the default SPF record so that it remains anonymous for resellers and it can be easily included if you want to create your own SPF record.

When running WordPress on a PHP5 enabled site you get the error below

CAUSE:

This is caused by a bug in older versions of WordPress.

RESOLUTION:

Either update to the latest version of WordPress as per the URL below

When you browse a page or click a link on your website you receive the error

HTTP Error 405 - The HTTP verb used to access this page is not allowed.

CAUSE:

This error can occur when you are trying to POST data to a page considered static such as a html file.

RESOLUTION:

Change your page to a dynamic page or edit the script to utilise GET instead fo POST.

Why am I unable to maintain sessions with ASP.NET?

SYMPTONS:

Scripts are unable to maintain session state information.

CAUSE:

To enhance uptime and maintain a stable system we constantly recycle website application pools when they have either been inactive for too long or have received a specific number of requests.

As a result session state information can be lost.

RESOLUTION:

We have enabled the ASP.NET Session State Service on all web servers. This will allo sessions to be carried across application pools. This can be enabled on your domain by editing the web.config

How do I use sendmail on Windows?

Sendmail is a UNIX based MTA program that does not exist on Windows.

Common Perl mail scripts reference '/usr/lib/sendmail' as the mail program within the script.

Instead to send mail using ActivePerl on Windows you should use the Mail::Sender or the Net::SMTP module.

This can be used as follows

$sender->MailFile({to => 'some@address.com', subject => 'Here is the file',
msg => "I'm sending you the list you wanted.",

NOTES:

If the script you are using is a commercial script we suggest contacting the Vendor and asking for a Windows compatible version that uses Mail::Sender or Net::SMTP

How do I transfer a domain away from AGUK?

Domains registered via AGUK

DETAILS:

If you no longer want AGUK to be the registrar for your domain then you must transfer the domain to another registrar.

The method of doing this depends on the domain.

UK Domain Names

If your domain ends in .uk then it is a UK domain name and is registered by us through Nominet. To transfer a UK domain name away from AGUK you must contact support with the domain name and the IPS TAG you want the domain to be transfered to. You can find out the IPS TAG from your new registrar.

Non UK Domain Names

This includes but is not limited to domains ending in .com .net .org and .biz. To transfer a non UK domain from AGUK you must first contact support and request that the domain is unlocked. We will then unlock the domain for a period of 7 days and email you the domains EPP authorization key for the domain. During this time you must initiate the transfer of your domain using the instructions provided by your new registrar.

If the domain is NOT transfered within 7 days then the domain will become re-locked and any renewal fees will still be due to AGUK. If the domain transfer fails and the domain becomes re-locked you can simply contact support and we will again unlock the domain.

NOTES:

We DO NOT charge any admin fee to transfer a domain away from AGUK.

However your new registrar may charge a fee or charge for additional renewal years upon you initiating the transfer.

Customers transfering a domain registration to AGUK

DETAILS:

If you want to transfer a domain registration to AGUK then the process and cost is dependant on the type of domain.

UK Domains (co.uk / org.uk / me.uk)

[Domain Registrations > Add New > Domain Administration to be Transfered]

Enter the domain name and select the relevant extension then click save.

Once you have done this you then need to contact the current hosting company or domain registrar and ask them to change the IPS Tag to AGUK

gTLD Domains (com / net / org / biz)

You must first perform the following actions with the current hosting company or domain registrar. They may charge and admin fee to do this and/or provide you access to an online control panel.

Ensure the domain status is changed to "unlocked"
Ensure the admin contact whois email address is working and accesible.
Request the EPP authorization key for the domain.

You must then perform the following actions at AGUK:

[Domain Registrations > Add New > Domain Administration to be Transfered]

Enter the domain name and select the relevant extension then click save.

You will now have an outstanding balance due on your account for an additional one years worth of registration. This is the standard fee and your domains registration period will be extended by one year upon successful completion of the transfer. You must settle this balance before the domain transfer commences.

You must now email support@aguk.net details of the domain name and the EPP authorization key provided by the previous hosting company or domain registrar.

Customers sending mail through AGUK via SMTP AUTH

SYMPTONS:

When you attempt to end a message via the AGUK mail servers using SMTP AUTH the message is rejected with the following error

501 5.7.1 <user@domain.com>... Permission Denied

CAUSE:

The email address used as the username for the SMTP AUTH session does not match the email address entered as the senders 'Email Address' within the email client.

RESOLUTION:

Ensure that the SMTP AUTH username exactly matches the Email Address specified in the email client.

In Microsoft Outlook this is specified as follows

Tools > Email Accounts > View or change existing e-mail accounts

Select email account > Change

Make sure that the 'Email Address:' field exactly matches the 'User Name:' field.

In Microsoft Outlook Express this is specified as follows

Tools > Accounts

Select email account > Properties

Under the General tab the 'Email address:' field must exactly match the 'Account name:' field as entered under the Servers tab.

Why is junk mail not being marked as Spam?

SYMPTONS:

You receive a large number of junk mail messages which are not marked as spam by our system.

CAUSE:

There can be a large number of reasons for this. Below are some important things to check.

Is spam filtering actually enabled on your account? See - How do I disable/enable spam filtering for an email account?
Is the sender email address in your whitelist? Spammers can easily forge the sending email address so the sender might be on one of your whitelists. See - Adding a sender to your whitelist
Are you forwarding mail to your AGUK mailbox via a different provider? It is difficult for our system to filter mail when it has been forwarded from another system as it is most likely the forwarding system will be a compliant mail server. Setting the domain up on the AGUK mail server directly will greatly increase our filtering abilities.

RESOLUTION:

Depending on the potential cause the suggested resolutions are linked above.

How do I disable/enable spam filtering for an email account?

You will see an option Instant Anti Spam:

Either check this to enable spam filtering or uncheck it to disable spam filtering on this email account. Click [Save Changes] when finished.

NOTES:

This setting is on a per email account basis and as such will need to be set on each mailbox you have. By default spam filtering is enabled upon mailbox creation.

550 Could not complete sender verify callout

Mail sent via AGUK Mail servers

SYMPTONS:

When you attempt to send mail to someone the recipient never receives the mail. The mail is eventually bounced back to you with an error similiar to those below

550 Could not complete sender verify callout

550 Sender verify failed

CAUSE:

Some mail servers attempt to validate the sending email address before accepting any mail. They do this by issuing a RCPT TO command to the sending mail server with the senders email address. If the sending mail server responds with a 250 command then they know the sending email address exists and therefore accept the message.

If they are unable to verify the sender then they issue a response similiar to that above.

The main reason that the sender verify can fail is because the remote mail server does not conform to standard RFCs. They issue a RCPT TO command to our server but do not wait long enough for a response. RFC 2821 #4.5.3.2 states that the mail server should wait up to 5 minutes for a response. As part of our email harvesting protection system we sometimes perform a delay on incoming connections.

RESOLUTION:

Contact the recipient by other means and ask them to whitelist your address.

and/or

ask the recipient to ensure their mail server complies with RFC 2821 #4.5.3.2.

450 Try again later

Anyone sending mail to an email account hosted by AGUK.
Anyone sending mail to a domain which routes mail through AGUK.

SYMPTONS:

Your mail server SMTP session shows the following error when communicating with the AGUK mail servers.

450 Try again later

You may also receive a bounce message with this error depending on the sending mail server.

CAUSE:

There is either a temporary problem with the mail server or the mail server is busy. As per the message simply resend your email and it should be received.

Sending MTA's should be configured to recognise a 450 error as a temporary error and retry to send the message automatically.

RESOLUTION:

If you are attempting to send mail through AGUK mail servers using SMTP Auth and receive this message then simply wait a few minutes and try again.

If you are sending mail to an email account hosted by AGUK and receive this message ensure the sending mail server is correctly configured to retry additional MX records or retry after a specified period of time.

Correctly configured MTA's should not be issuing a bounce message upon receiving a 450 without first retrying for a specified period of time. Users should contact their system administrator to check this.

NOTES:

Make sure the sending MTA is configured to retry alternate MX records so as to avoid any problems.

How do I stop bounced messages for mail not sent by me?

DETAILS:

It is possible using the Server Rules to filter out bounce messages received that were not originally sent by you. This can happen if your email address has been forged in a bulk mailing.

To do this you first need to login to webmail at http://mail.yourdomain.com

Once logged in proceed to [Settings > Server Rules > Advanced View]

Make sure that the [Enable] box is checked.

Near the bottom of this page will be a button labelled [Edit File]

Click this and a new window will open up (You may need to disable any pop-up blockers for this).

If you already have existing rules these will be listed.

Add the following text on a new line at the bottom of any existing rules:

0:S~<>

Then click the [Save Changes] button. The file will be saved and you will see the rule appear.

The rule works by checking if the sender is <> (which the sender is for bounce messages) and then rejecting them.

NOTES:

There are some side effects of using this rule.

Some mailing lists send mail from <> and therefore this will not arrive unless you whitelist the FROM address.
Many auto responders send mail using mail from <>. These will not arrive unless you whiteist the FROM address.

If you find mail is not arriving becuase of this rule then consider whitelisting the sender. But make sure that the above rule for rejecting bounced mail is the last rule in the list.

421 Server too busy

Many spambots and servers that send huge volumes of unsolicited mail do not always perform DNS lookups when sending mail. Thsi is to save them time and resources.

Instead they may first try to deliver the mail directly to common mail server names such as mail.yourdomain.com / smtp.yourdomain.com etc. If this is a valid entry on your domain then mail will be delivered directly to your server and bypass EBAGS.

NOTES:

We recommend where possible ensuring your mail server rejects all incoming mail except from legitimate sources such as yourslf and our EBAGS delivery IP.

Why is my mail server still receiving external connections?

How to switch between PHP4 and PHP5

DETAILS:

All domains can now use either PHP4 or PHP5. However due to changes in the code you will not be able to run PHP4 code on a PHP5 enabled site and vice versa.

Therefore you can switch your domain between PHP4 and PHP5 from the Helm control panel. To do this proceed to

Under the Website Extensions section will be the option to switch PHP versions or disable it completely for your domain.

NOTES:

Resellers will need to ensure that any plans they have created include a quantity of PHP4 and PHP5 installations to allow switching on a domain.

There are two main differences between using the autosignup.asp page and the Signup Script Generator.

1. The autosignup.asp page is hosted within the Helm control panel itself whereas the Signup Script Generator creates code for you to place on your website.

2. The autosignup.asp page requires payment to be successful beforecreating an account and sending the user the welcome message. But the Signup Script Generator actually creates the account and sends the welcome message before payment is received. The customer then has to log in to Helm and make payment before they can add any domains.

NOTES:

The Signup Script Generator is useful for when you do not use any of the Helm 3 support gateways and instead take offline payments. The customer can signup via the generated script and you can then activate the package when payment is eventually received.

If you only want to provide the user access to Helm once they have paid then you should use the autosignup.asp page.
